But forget dusty ledgers, boring calculators, and grey-suit vibes. Because when we sat down with Elżbieta Janik-Krause, the boss behind Kancelaria Rachunkowa Denarius, we realized this wasn’t going to be your typical snoozefest about tax codes.

This is the woman who turned balance sheets into TikToks, who built one of the sharpest accounting teams in Poznań, and who once admitted someone tried to expense… a condom. (Yes, really. We’ll get there.)

The Interview

When did you first know numbers were your thing?

Honestly? I think it started with board games. I always had to be the banker or in charge of the money. My brother probably hated it, but hey — someone had to make sure the Monopoly cash was safe! (laughs)

What makes Denarius stand out from all the other firms?

We’re open to everyone. From one-person freelancers to big international companies. We don’t put you in a box — we just make the numbers work. Plus, we speak English fluently, which makes life easier for foreigners in Poznań.

How big is the team now?

Around 17 or 18 people. Honestly, I lose count sometimes — which is funny for an accountant. (laughs)

Do you still get involved in bookkeeping yourself?

Not really. My team does an amazing job, and I focus more on running Denarius. Plus, TikTok now takes up a surprising chunk of my day.

What’s harder: balancing a company’s books or making TikToks?

TikTok! (laughs) No contest. Numbers make sense. Algorithms? Not so much.

When was the last time you issued an invoice yourself?

Oh wow… probably six years ago! My team doesn’t let me near them anymore.

The big one — will AI make accountants obsolete?

No way. Accounting in Poland is too complicated. The law changes constantly, and no algorithm can replace common sense and human advice. You’ll always need that human element.

Have you ever dreamed about bookkeeping?

(laughs) No way! That would be really weird. I leave the dreams for better things.

Okay, but important question: can I write off my dog as a security expense?

Sure. Almost everything is possible. (laughs)

How about my office goldfish?

If you push it, I’ll make it work. (laughs)

What’s the most common thing clients ask you?

“How can I pay less tax?” Without a doubt.

And the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen someone try to expense?

Someone once tried to expense a condom. Don’t ask me how she justified it — but she did, and the tax office accepted her argument. (laughs)

Outside of work — what’s your guilty pleasure?

Clothes. Definitely clothes.

Okay, practical one. If I sell clothes second-hand on Vinted, do I have to pay tax?

Yes — there’s a limit before you start paying. And not many people know this, but Vinted actually reports your sales to the tax office now.

Is there a sexy side to accounting?

Hmm… sexy might be pushing it. But we do know more about a company than the owners themselves sometimes. That kind of power is… let’s say, attractive. (laughs)

Are you bound by secrecy?

Of course. The entire team signs non-disclosure agreements. Whatever happens at Denarius, stays at Denarius.

Do clients sometimes think they know better than you?

(laughs) Oh, all the time. But usually, after about five minutes, they realize we know what we’re talking about.
