Insane Japanese menu in Poznan!

Japanese curry is a dish that is hugely popular in Japan. It is readily available at various restaurants, and many households cook it at home too. After importing curry from India, the Europeans invented curry powder so that the layman could cook curry without having to master the intricacies of spices. This form of curry was introduced to Japan during the Meiji Period (1868-1912), from which the Japanese adapted the dish to suit their tastes. Haikara in Poznan specializes in Japanese Curry and we met up with the owner to find out more about the best Japanese food in Poznan!

Where are you from originally?

Im from Hiroshima Japan

How did you end up in Poland?

It’s quite a story! I was traveling through Europe and had a plan to settle down in Budapest in Hungary. Then Covid and the lockdowns started when I was in Poland so I was stuck here for quite some time and so I decided to open Haikara in the meantime. It has been a success so Im staying 🙂

Hi. When did you open Haikara?

I opened in January 2022

What is the biggest difference between Poland and Japan?

The atmosphere in general is completely different. Japanese people are super polite. Even too polite sometimes. Even for me! I like in Poland how families are very close.

Is it true that the lower you bow your head in Japan when you meet someone, the more respect you show?

Hahaha yes, that’s true.

Is Japanese food the healthiest in the world?

Well, we live the longest so im sure it has something to do with it.

Are there many Japanese in Poznan?

Not really. I heard there’s about 30.

What does Haikara mean?

It means Fashionable, having elegance or taste or refinement.

Describe your menu

We focus on Japanese Curry but not only of course! Most of the menu is unusual and unique such as the Shirunashi Tantan Men which is popular in Hiroshima. Also, the Keezma Kare with rice, beef, and pork minced together with melted mozzarella cheese and half half-boiled egg on top is also unusual in Poland and delicious!

What is your most traditional dish?

Katsu curry (カツカレー). It’s a combination of Japanese curry and a panko-breaded cutlet that is served over steamed rice. It is the ultimate comfort dish when you have a craving for a big, hearty meal. Its also my favorite dish on the menu.

Which vege dish do you recommend?

Definitely the Tofu Katsu Kare.

How authentic is your menu compared to Japan?

I would say about 90%. The Polish version is a little sweeter.

It’s been a pleasure to meet you. Finally, Haikara is my new favorite Japanese restaurant. Your menu is insane and can’t wait to share this information with others. Have you any plans for the future?

Thanks. It was a pleasure also. Im sure something will be happening in 2024
