We meet the Man Behind the Lens: Studio29’s Artur Spills His Secrets (Almost)

Hey Poznań

Remember that piece we dropped about Studio29 — the spot where your blurry selfies go to die and your “I’m kinda hot actually” era begins? Well, we weren’t done there. We decided to catch up with the wizard himself, Artur, to find out what it’s really like to photograph the faces, food, and brands of Poznań for a living.

So we grabbed a coffee, stepped into his studio on Święty Marcin, and got my pen ready. What followed was half interview, half therapy session, and a lot of laughter.

The Interview

Hi Artur. It’s not only portraits you do, right? What’s your favorite type of photography?
I love portraits, definitely — every face tells a story. But I won’t lie, food and product shoots are easier to control. No one blinks, no one complains, and no one asks, “Can you Photoshop me thinner?”

What kind of clients do you enjoy working with most?
The confident ones. It just makes everything flow better.
(laughs) But hey, even if someone comes in as stiff as a board, my job’s to loosen them up. Sometimes I feel more like a therapist than a photographer.

Okay but… what if someone’s, you know, not exactly model material?
(laughs) Ugly people don’t exist. Only bad lighting! I’ve seen miracles happen with a softbox.

Can you tell if someone’s going to be photogenic before you shoot them?
Not at all! I often get surprised. Some people walk in like “nah, I hate pictures,” and five minutes later I’m like, “Okay, Vogue cover, calm down.”

Any funny stories from your shoots?

(laughs) Plenty — but most I probably shouldn’t tell here! A clean one? Once, a guy showed up all business in a suit. Looked super serious. Then he asked if he could change for the shoot. I said sure, and he came out dressed as a full clown. Red nose, giant shoes, everything. I almost dropped my camera.

What’s one piece of equipment you swear by?
My tethering cable. It connects the camera to the computer so I can see photos live as I shoot. It’s the difference between “I think this looks good” and “Yup, that’s the shot.”

What do people usually try to hide in portraits?
Women especially don’t like showing too much neck for some reason. Maybe it’s a universal mystery, like why no one likes their left profile.

Most common request you get?
“To take photos from their ‘good side.’” I’ve heard that phrase more times than “smile!”

If you could photograph someone famous, who would it be?
Hmm… Robert Makłowicz. The man’s a legend. Just imagine the energy!

Would you ever shoot a sex scene?
(laughs) No way!
Even for a million zł?
Okay… deal! Everyone has a price.

Favorite photographer?
Platon. The guy’s a genius — he’s photographed everyone from Obama to Adele. He can capture someone’s soul with one click.

If I want to buy my own camera, what should I look for?
Get one with eye or face detection — it keeps your shots sharp every time. And don’t go below a 28x35mm sensor size. Bigger sensors = better light and details.

Analog or digital?
Digital, for convenience. But analogue? It’s got soul. It’s like comparing Spotify to vinyl.

Black & white or color?
Black & white. Always. It strips away the noise and leaves the emotion.

Last question — can you make me look cool in a black & white photo… in three minutes?
(laughs) I’m not even fully set up, but sure — let’s see what magic I can pull off.

The Results Are In

A quick cigarette break and three minutes later — boom. The man did it again. No fancy setup, no retakes, just straight-up camera sorcery. Somehow, he made me look like I belong in a vintage art film instead of behind a laptop.

Get yours!

If you’re hunting for a portrait that actually feels like you (or at least a better-lit version of you), hit up Artur. Don’t stress about the prices either — he’s probably got the best deal in town. The things we do for you, dear readers. You’re welcome. 😎
