Mirage Tattoo Shop in Poznan: A Candid Conversation with Iza

Mirage Tattoo Shop in Poznan, a fresh addition to the city tattoo scene, has been making its mark since July 2023. Situated at 47 Garbary Street in the heart of Poznań, near the old market square, this intimate studio is the brainchild of the passionate couple, Izabela and Eugene aka Zenia. With tattooing journeys that began in 2017, they honed their craft in a renowned collective for two years before taking the plunge to establish their independent venture. We spoke to Iza to find out more…

Hi Iza, where did you two first cross paths?

Fate brought us together in another tattoo studio in Wilda. Subsequently, we collaborated at the Slonca Collective in Poznan.

Whose brainchild was it to establish your own studio?

The vision to open our studio originated from Zenia.

Who conceived the name Mirage?

Choosing the name Mirage was a meticulous process, but we eventually found common ground. Zenia was the mastermind behind the logo design.

Did you explore other locales before settling on your current space in Garbary?

Given that we reside in Garbary and our child attends school around the corner, choosing this space was a no-brainer when it became available.

Between the two of you, who excels at tattooing?

Let’s say I excel in certain styles, while Zenia shines in others.

What is your preferred tattoo style?

I specialize in realism, while Zenia has a penchant for traditional tattoos.

Have you inked each other?

Absolutely! Zenia has adorned me with a few tattoos, and I’ve reciprocated once.

Any memorable mistakes you’ve made?

Oh, indeed, in the early days. I recall misspelling the word “before,” omitting the ‘e.’ Unfortunately, there was no space to rectify it afterward. Fortunately, it was on a friend, so he took it in his stride!

How did your parents react when you shared your decision to become a tattoo artist?

My dad passed away when I was 13, so he never knew. However, my mom has always been disapproving, even hating that I have tattoos on my body. She still holds out hope that I’ll opt for a ‘normal’ job. It’s a generational difference.

Do you have a favorite tattoo?

I cherish them all. While some may be more personally satisfying, I’m never completely content, even when the client is delighted. I’m a perfectionist.

Are there any tattoo requests you won’t entertain?

Certain symbols are off the table, and anything associated with pedophilia is an absolute no.

Have you tattooed family members?

I created my cousin’s inaugural tattoo and have done five for him since. He’s a valued client, even though I don’t charge him.

Is there any hint of jealousy when Zenia tattoos a half-naked girl?

Hahaha, I’ll refrain from commenting on that!

It’s been a pleasure meeting you. Im very impressed with your studio and will definitely be recommending you guys. One last thing…What do you find most rewarding and challenging about being a tattoo artist?

The most rewarding aspect is pursuing one’s passion. On the flip side, the constant drive for self-improvement can be stressful. There’s an unspoken competition among artists as well.
