WTF!
Sometimes a story comes along that makes you lose a little faith in humanity. This is one of those stories.
One cold night in January 2025, an ostrich named Zenek became the victim of one of the most disturbing animal cruelty cases Poland has seen in years.
The attack happened between January 10–11 at Traperska Osada, an agritourism farm just outside Poznań. According to investigators and Polish media reports, three men broke onto the property in the middle of the night and targeted the farm’s ostrich.

What followed was pure brutality.
Zenek was beaten with a blunt object, dragged by the wings and neck, and left badly injured. The bird initially survived the attack, but the damage was too severe. Two days later, Zenek died.

As if the violence wasn’t shocking enough, investigators soon uncovered something even darker. Parts of the abuse had allegedly been recorded on a mobile phone, and showed disturbing intentions of raping the animal. Those materials later became key evidence in court.
The main perpetrator, Łukasz Sz., was eventually brought before a court in Poznań. The recent verdict? Seven years in prison.

Judge Robert Grześ didn’t hold back, handing down one of the toughest sentences Poland has seen for animal cruelty. Alongside the prison term, the court imposed a 15-year ban on owning animals and ordered the offender to pay financial compensation to the farm owner and a local animal shelter.

For animal rights advocates, the ruling felt like a line in the sand.
For years, critics have argued that animal cruelty in Poland often gets treated like a minor offense. But this time, the court sent a clear message: extreme cruelty will come with real consequences.
