Stumbling Upon Popolo: Grunwald’s Rising Star Near Marcelinska Forest

As foodies at Poznan Daily, we’re always on the lookout for the next great eatery, and we recently hit the jackpot with Popolo, a fantastic restaurant thats a short walk to the Marcelinska Forest in Grunwald on Jeleniogórska 12A. From the moment we set foot inside, Popolo radiated charm and warmth. The dishes looked even better and people looked…happy! We know a good place when we smell one!

We were lucky enough to snag a few minutes with Rafal, the visionary owner behind Popolo. He shared the brief but captivating history of the restaurant, which has been delighting diners for just 1.5 years. Rafal, a long-time local, was inspired to create a spot for his community. The location previously housed “jUNNI,” a wine bar that couldn’t withstand the pandemic’s challenges. With nearly 25 years in the gastronomy industry, Rafal knew Italian cuisine’s universal appeal would draw in everyone, leading to the birth of Popolo.

Rafal’s culinary journey started back in 2000 in Zielona Góra, where he worked as a dishwasher at a tiny pizzeria named “Roma” that still holds a special spot in his heart. He climbed the gastronomic ladder through various establishments before finally deciding to venture out on his own. Partnering with the budding Popolo chain, which shares his passion for people (after all, “il popolo” means “the people”), Rafal has created something truly special.

Popolo may be part of a chain, but it feels uniquely Rafal’s, bursting with personality and warmth. It’s no wonder the place is always packed. Apart from pizza, Rafal tells us their bestsellers include grandine with forest mushrooms, shrimp in white wine, Popolo pizza, cod fillet, and bistecca with grandine. Each dish sounds more tantalizing than the last.

The outdoor seating area at Popolo is an absolute delight, perfect for those warm, lazy afternoons. And with plans for live music events, it’s set to become the go-to spot in Grunwald. We can’t wait to dive into Popolo’s menu and bring you our TOP 3 recommendations. But don’t wait for us – head over to Popolo and see for yourself why this place is buzzing.
