Rabies Found Again in Poznan

The Lowdown

Rabies has been detected once again in Poznań, and this time, it’s a serious warning for residents. A dead bat, discovered on April 11 in Wilson Park, has tested positive for rabies, prompting authorities to designate the area as a “vulnerable zone.” The Poviat Veterinary Doctor has issued a ban in the affected area, including strict rules to protect both pets and humans.

Vulnerable Area: Wilson Park

The area of Wilson Park, located at ul. Śniadeckich 30, has now been marked as a risk zone. The announcement, shared by the Crisis Management Center of the City of Poznań, urges caution. Several restrictions have been put in place, including:

A ban on organizing fairs, exhibitions, competitions, and shows involving dogs, cats, and other animals sensitive to rabies.

The prohibition of moving dogs and cats who are not vaccinated against rabies in and out of the area.

Any dogs without valid rabies vaccinations must be vaccinated immediately.

Humans Are at Risk Too

It’s important to remember that rabies can also pose a danger to humans. If bitten or scratched by an animal infected with rabies—such as a bat or any other mammal—you could be at risk of contracting the disease. Rabies is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, typically through a bite or scratch. Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal, but immediate medical treatment with a rabies vaccination series (post-exposure prophylaxis or PEP) can prevent the disease from developing if administered right after exposure.

Take Precautions

If you live in or visit the area, it’s critical to stay alert, avoid contact with wild animals, and ensure your pets are properly vaccinated against rabies. If you or your pet are bitten or scratched by an animal showing unusual behavior (aggression, foaming at the mouth, etc.), seek medical attention immediately.

A map showing the affected area has been shared to help residents stay informed. Let’s all stay vigilant to protect ourselves, our pets, and the community from this deadly virus.
