Is Rex Worth the Hype?

Gentrification

Łazarz is quietly becoming one of the most interesting districts in Poznań. It’s going through what you’d call gentrification — a process where older, more traditional urban areas start to attract new cafés, design spots, and younger residents, gradually shifting the vibe, prices, and overall lifestyle of the neighbourhood. And honestly, places like Rex feel like they’re built for exactly that transition.

Rex fits perfectly into this new Łazarz identity — minimal, design-led, and food-focused without overcomplicating things. It’s the kind of spot that doesn’t just serve breakfast, it defines the morning culture of the area. The space itself pulls you in immediately; clean interiors, modern plating, and a calm but confident aesthetic. It’s a big win on atmosphere alone. A perfect place to chill and read our current paper version.

The Grub

The menu is intentionally short — very much in line with current café trends where quality, not quantity, is the focus. It feels curated rather than overloaded, and that simplicity actually works in its favour.

We started with the omelet with avocado and chilli oil (39 PLN) (chleb na zakwasie, karmelizowane ubijane masło, ser Gruyère, awokado, chilli oil, sałatka). This was the standout dish. The sourdough base with rich caramelised whipped butter and Gruyère already sets a strong foundation, but the combination of creamy avocado and spicy chilli oil pushes it into something memorable. This is the kind of dish you don’t forget — easily the star of the menu.

Next was the warm tuna melt with kimchi and cheddar (38 PLN). Comforting, savoury, and well-executed. The kimchi adds a nice fermented kick that lifts the richness of the cheese. That said, it’s also the kind of dish you could realistically recreate at home without much effort. Good, but not necessarily something that feels irreplaceable — we’re curious to see if it stays long-term on the menu or rotates out with trends.

We also tried the sweet pancake (32 PLN). Soft, fluffy, and heavily sweetened. For us, it leaned a bit too far on the sugary side, but that’s very subjective — if you like dessert-style breakfasts, this will definitely hit the mark.

Our Opinion

Overall, Rex feels very aligned with what’s happening in Łazarz right now. The area is clearly evolving into a more hipster, café-driven district of Poznań, and Rex sits right in the middle of that shift. What works most here isn’t just the food — it’s the combination of design, simplicity, and atmosphere. You go in for breakfast, but you stay because the place feels like it belongs in the new version of the neighbourhood.

Yes — without hesitation. If anything, it’s worth returning just for the omelet with avocado and chilli oil alone. That dish is enough to anchor a repeat visit. We’ll definitely be back to try more of the menu — but already, Rex feels like one of those places that is going to become a core part of Łazarz’s new identity.
