Poznań is reeling from yet another gut-wrenching case of child abuse, as 30-year-old Damian H. and 19-year-old Wiktoria G. face trial for the brutal treatment of their two-month-old daughter, Laura. The couple stands accused of beating, choking, and throwing their infant, causing a skull fracture that nearly claimed her life. Laura’s injuries were discovered when she was rushed to a Poznań hospital after her mother claimed the baby had fallen.
This is not an isolated incident. The abuse came to light when Laura, who suffered convulsions and fainting, was urgently transferred to a neurosurgical unit. Doctors confirmed that without immediate surgery, the baby would have died. Both parents were swiftly detained and charged with physical and mental abuse.
The prosecutor is demanding a 12-year prison sentence, citing the extreme cruelty of the abuse. “This case underscores a grim reality—child abuse with a chilling indifference to human suffering,” the prosecutor said.
Defense attorneys have argued for a lighter sentence, attributing the abuse to the parents’ intellectual disabilities and troubled backgrounds. They claim that Wiktoria’s upbringing in a violent, dysfunctional home distorted her understanding of what constitutes violence.
This case is yet another tragic reminder of the silent suffering endured by countless children. As Poznań grapples with the heartbreak of this latest abuse scandal, we must confront the grim reality that many children continue to suffer in silence.
