“I Felt Like I Was in Hell” Jezyce fire survivor Shares His Story

Artur Gilewski, one of the survivors of the infamous tenement explosion on Kraszewskiego Street in Poznań, has spoken out about the night that changed his life forever. After a long fight for survival, his health is slowly improving, but his road to recovery is far from over. In a recent conversation with his sister Kasia, Artur described the moment of the explosion as feeling “like hell.”

The blast claimed the lives of two firefighters and injured more than a dozen others. Among those seriously hurt was Artur, who had gone back into the danger zone to save his dogs. Despite warnings from firefighters, he was caught in the explosion.

Artur’s Battle for Recovery

Artur suffered severe burns and was rushed to a specialized hospital, where doctors fought to save his life. For weeks, he remained in a pharmacological coma. His condition, though still serious, has slowly started to improve. Recently, he woke up and began speaking, though his body is still covered in wounds and scabs, and his ability to walk is uncertain.

His sister Kasia, who has been by his side through the ordeal, shared his reflections on the traumatic night. “He told me that when it exploded, he felt like he was in hell,” she recounted. “I asked him why he didn’t tell anyone how badly he was burned right away, and he said others had it worse. That’s just the kind of person he is — always putting himself last, even when he was in critical condition.”

A Community’s Support

Artur’s fight is far from over. Extensive rehabilitation lies ahead, and it will be a long time before he can return to work. To support him through this difficult journey, Artur’s loved ones launched a fundraiser, and the community has rallied behind him. So far, around 160,000 zł has been raised toward the 250,000 zł goal, but more support is needed.

Donations

For anyone who wishes to help Artur as he continues his recovery, donations are still being accepted. His strength and determination in the face of unimaginable pain have touched the hearts of many, and with continued support, he hopes to rebuild his life.
