Beloved Bear Baloo Passes Away

Sad news has struck the hearts of many in Poznań—Baloo, the much-loved brown bear of the city’s ZOO, has passed away at just 12 years old. The ZOO staff shared the heartbreaking announcement via social media, leaving animal lovers across the city in mourning.

In recent weeks, Baloo’s health had taken a turn for the worse. Despite the dedicated care of veterinarians and ZOO staff, his condition continued to decline. “His circus past caught up with him despite all the treatments and medication,” the ZOO’s post read. “We hoped he’d pull through, but sadly, a few days ago, Baloo’s frail, sick paws gave out. After X-rays, we made the tough decision not to wake him from anesthesia and to spare him further suffering. He passed peacefully.”

Baloo had a tragic past. Rescued in 2016 from a circus in southern Poland, he had spent years living in neglect and poor conditions. Thanks to the intervention of the Viva Foundation and the police, Baloo was brought to the Poznań New ZOO, where he finally experienced the love, care, and dignity he deserved. Since then, he had become a favorite of many ZOO visitors, who were touched by his story of survival.

His passing is a huge loss not just for the ZOO staff who cared for him but for everyone who followed his journey from circus cruelty to a life of safety and compassion. The Poznań ZOO has reminded everyone that Baloo’s story highlights the importance of fighting for better lives for animals still being exploited in entertainment.

Rest in peace, Baloo. You’ll be missed by many.
