With summer in full swing, ticks are more prevalent in Poznań’s green areas like forests, city gardens, and parks. These tiny creatures can carry serious diseases such as Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis.
Rising Tick Numbers
Statistics show an increase in tick numbers and related illnesses in Poznań in recent years. Prof. Piotr Tryjanowski from the Poznań University of Life Sciences attributes this to milder winters, warmer and wetter springs, and urbanization, which creates more tick-friendly environments.
Tick Activity
Ticks are most active from April to October. They thrive in moist conditions, so hot, dry months can reduce their numbers. However, they remain a risk throughout the summer.
Disease Risks
Ticks can transmit Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis. Lyme disease often starts with migratory erythema, a spreading red rash. If you suspect infection, contact your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Tick-borne encephalitis can be prevented with a vaccine available from 13 months old, ideally administered six months before tick season.
Tick Habitats
Ticks are commonly found in forests, parks, meadows, and areas with tall grass and dense bushes. They prefer humid, shaded environments. Prof. Jerzy Michalak from Adam Mickiewicz University notes that ticks often bite adults below the waist and children on the head, neck, and shoulders. Seek medical advice if you find a tick on your body!
