Today marks a significant milestone for Poznań as the banks of Chwaliszewo and Ostrów Tumski have been connected with the final element of the steel arch structure for the new Berdychowski bridges. To commemorate this event, a signed erection act was placed in a time capsule and incorporated into the structure.
Residents of Poznań can now see the investment taking shape. Eventually, the new bridges will provide pedestrian and cycling crossings between Chwaliszewo, Ostrów Tumski, and Berdychowo. The assembly of the last steel arch element over the Warta River, which connects Chwaliszewo and Ostrów Tumski, marks the completion of the bridge’s foundation directly above the shipping route.
On this historic occasion, an erection act was signed and placed in a capsule within the newly mounted structure. “A single element of the mounted steel structure of this arc weighs about 25 tons and is 23 meters long. Five parts are needed to build the entire width of the bridge, which are then merged at the destination with each other and with the other elements of the arc,” said Justyna Litka, president of Poznań City Investments.
The Warta bridge will span 165 meters in length and 12 meters in width, weighing over 1,500 tons. Elements of the structure are currently mounted on temporary supports within the river current. In contrast, the second bridge, slightly smaller at 117 meters in length, is also seeing the installation of further platform elements based on its steel arch structure. Ultimately, both bridges will rely solely on abutments, with the temporary supports being removed upon completion.
These bridges are set to enhance connectivity and mobility in Poznań, reflecting a significant investment in the city’s infrastructure and a commitment to sustainable, pedestrian, and cyclist-friendly urban development
