African Swine Fever (ASF) is spreading at the New Zoo in Poznań. According to Grzegorz Wegiera, the Poviat Veterinary Doctor in Poznań, “ASF was detected in the Poznań zoo. The virus has not spread beyond the zoo.” Wegiera further revealed, “During the latest inspection on June 5, we found 10 dead wild boars, adding to the four discovered previously. The zoo continues to report new cases to us.” He also mentioned that the city is required to capture and euthanize affected animals, with a specific entity already chosen to handle this task soon.
Despite these findings, the zoo has not confirmed any immediate actions. “No such steps have been taken yet, and I am not sure if they will be,” stated Jarosław Przybylski, the zoo’s veterinarian, in an interview with “Głos Wielkopolski.”
There are currently no plans to close the zoo to visitors. Dominika Kmet, the Wielkopolska Provincial Veterinary Doctor, assured the public, “I don’t think the zoo will be closed due to ASF. In areas where wild boars or pigs are present, staff should prevent the animals from coming into contact with the virus through proper gates, sluices, and protective clothing.”
It’s important to note that African Swine Fever (ASF) is not dangerous to humans. Visitors to the zoo can rest assured that their health is not at risk from this virus.
