Another Tenement House Blaze in Poznan Brings Back Haunting Memories

On the 3rd of January 2025, a fierce fire engulfed the attic of a tenement house on ul. Mostowa in the Old Town in Poznań, sending flames and thick smoke billowing into the night sky. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours, wrapping up their efforts around 3 a.m. Though the fire was devastating, thankfully, no one was injured.

Social media lit up with dramatic images of the fire, with tongues of flames tearing through the roof of the historic building. Residents of the burning tenement and nearby properties were quickly evacuated, some seeking refuge in a bus provided at the scene. A fire brigade drone hovered overhead, helping firefighters assess the inaccessible areas safely.

In total, 15 fire brigades and around 30 firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the inferno. While the flames were subdued, the aftermath is severe, with the attic destroyed and one apartment significantly damaged. For some residents, the wait to return home continues.

This fire stirred painful memories for Poznań locals, recalling the tragic events of August last year on ul. Kraszewski, where an explosion during a tenement blaze claimed the lives of two firefighters. The scars from that tragedy still run deep, and last night’s events reignited the collective grief and concern.

As investigations into the cause of the fire begin, let’s keep the residents and first responders in our thoughts. Their courage and quick action prevented an even greater tragedy.
